It is believed that Tourist Sapiens died from a violent attack by a herd of cows. It is known that during this period, more people died from cow-related incidents than from, for example, shark attacks. Recall that before the Great Extinction, cows were mammals that could reach a height of 1.2 to 1.5 meters tall and could weigh between 600 and 800 kg. In the Montafon area in particular, they grazed as cattle in these alpine mountains following the custom of three-pass farming or Maisäß, as it was called locally. A shepherd took care of them and guided them, although for the most part, the cows enjoyed a certain freedom to graze as they pleased.

Although gentle in disposition, these cows were lethal if provoked or threatened. It is believed that Tourist sapiens may have irritated the cows with his actions and presence, prompting them to lash out and kill him on the spot. In an act of revenge, the entire herd defecated on him, covering his remains completely in feces. Thus, his remains were completely covered in faeces. Thanks to the lack of oxygen at these altitudes and the subsequent frosts due to climate change, the conditions provided the perfect environment for their preservation of his remains. While the skeleton appears to have been dissolved during the first stages of decomposition in the manure, the objects of man-made materials have been perfectly preserved, giving rise to what is known today as “new fossilisation” (novus fossile de merda).
Today, we owe our thanks to all those cows that participated in the slaughter. Without their fury and faeces, we would not have the first Tourist sapiens.
